Hedge Against Depression

Whether it’s physical or mental, depressions are something you fall into. It could be an obstacle or a wrong turn under a bad break flying in from left field. Distracted from our normal routines and responsibilities, stuff seems to pile up around us, literally and figuratively. Sometimes I forget that I can’t keep shoving things aside without running out of room. Things fall off the table. It’s hard to ignore, and I should know better. But I’m not ready. So since I’m to blame when something spills and falls and breaks, I’ll call myself a name. If there’s a mirror around, I’ll give myself a dirty look askance.

But it doesn’t help. Room gets dirtier.

When I run out of names to call myself, I figure it’s time to clean up.

Each accomplishment is a step out of depression, and you get that better outlook. Before you know it, you’re on top of the world, ready to make the same missteps.

An important human value automatically limits the severity of depression. I believe that the empathetic are less likely to be caught up in depression.

For one thing, we don’t want our crap to inconvenience other people just out of consideration, let alone empathy.

And listening to others can make my problems sound whiney.

Also, when we care about others, we need to take care of ourselves so we can be somewhat available. Talk the talk. Walk the walk.

Thank you for your time.
